What will the studio be like? |
| A |
As you can see from the picture above, the venue is a spacious, sunny place to have your lesson in with a beautiful view. We have 8 poles, with ample space between them, so you can have maximum pole time and enough space for floorwork with each and every lesson. We ONLY use X-Poles (www.xpole.co.uk) We have:2 x 45mm chrome poles so those with small hands and light grip will find pole dancing easy with Defy Gravity. We also have 4 x 50mm chrome poles, which is the current competition standard size for those wishing to enter Championships. And finally our rubber coated `Chinese Circus` Style pole, which is perfect for men who wish to practise in jeans.
Your Instructor always keeps her first aid, insurance certificate and PDC Approved certificate at the studio for all students to check if they wish to. |

| Q |
Who attends Pole Dance classes? |
| A |
Everyone! Quite simply. Male or female. As long as you are over 18 you can attend a class.
Defy Gravity students all come from different backrounds, and are different ages. Some come to class to supplement thier work out regime. For others pole dance is the only excerise they enjoy. Some come for the fun of it, some compete at national level.
Everyone has thier own reason to why they love pole dance classes with Defy Gravity, and each reason is the right one. |

| Q |
What happens at a Pole Dance class? |
| A |
On your first class, you will be asked to fill in a PARQ form.
Then onto the warm up, lots of wiggles are involved to get everyone giggling. After which, you can put your dance shoes if you wish to wear some?
Next is the pole dance part of class, which will cover dance moves, spins, sits, lifts, tricks, floorwork and strength exercises.
Lastly the cool down which will cover stretches to improve flexibility.
Even though every hour seems to fly by, you will be suprised by how much we cover and how much you learn in just one lesson. |

| Q |
I think I may be too nervous to join a class on my own? |
| A |
This is perfectly normal.
All classes at Defy Gravity are held in a comfortable, confidence building, fun environment. Everyone is in the same boat as you starting out, and everyone is too busy having a good time and concentrating on thier own pole work to worry about comparing. Group classes are a great way to meet new people that you already have something in common with (pole dance).
Defy Gravity is a `drama free zone` and students are encouraged to leave all issues and baggage at the door and just have fun at class with thier fellow students.
Any sulky or diva like behaviour is not even acknowledged, let alone pandered to, which has proved to create a permanently postive environment full of amazing people.
So come along and try a pole dance class, we cant wait to meet you!

| Q |
Why do I have to be over 18?
|
| A |
Defy Gravity's insurance only covers bodies over 18. As I do not have Young Bodies Training and have not been CRB checked.
Pole Dancing and Pole Fitness, like Gymnastics and Horizontal Bar is quite a high impact activity. As young people are still growing and have soft joints, someone specially trained in teaching young bodies is essential.
Also, even though Pole Fitness is an available option at Defy Gravity, some prefer to learn Authentic Pole Dance, where the moves can be very raunchy indeed. |

| Q |
Can men learn with Defy Gravity? |
| A |
Men are very welcome!
We even have a rubber coated Chinese/ Circus style pole so that you do not even need to get your legs out if you do not wish to.
Currently I have male students who attend group pole dance classes alongside the female students (as long as they are comfortable with this, they are always asked first).
I also have male students who have One2One classes who like to focus on stregnth building.
Feel free to get in contact if you are interested in any of the above options.

| Q |
Am I too old for Pole Dancing?
|
| A |
Pole dance classes are for everyone! My eldest student being 64!
Currently, we have students in thier 20s, 30s,40s and 50s.
Your Instructor is 35.
If you have never Pole Danced before then we will start right at the very beginning. So it does not matter what age, size or shape you are! |

|
| Q |
Do you need to be thin and already strong to do this?
|
| A |
Deciding you need to get fit BEFORE starting Pole Dance is the same deciding to do some Show Jumping before taking riding lessons.
Its a fallacy that one has to be already strong or a small size to come to a Pole Dance class. People of all ages and sizes attend Defy Gravity classes and have success.
The majority of our advanced Defy Gravity students started out the same way as everyone else did, right at the beginner, with no prior fitness interest and with both hands on the pole.
They ALL wish they had discovered pole dance sooner.

|
| Q |
What should I wear? |
| A |
You need to be able to complete the warm up session, grip the pole, have freedom of movement and feel comfortable. You will need bare arms and legs to be able to grip the pole effectively, an ideal outfit would be t-shirt, or top and shorts, but you can wear jogging trousers if you wish to.
No jewellery to be worn, as pieces may break. Once the warm up is complete you can wear heels if you wish, provided they are not stilletoes or over 5 inches*
For men working with the Chinese Pole, you can wear jeans, very flexible soled trainers and a hooded top. Layers are recomended.
IMPORTANT: Do not use moisturisers or lotions on the body before class, as this causes your skin, and my pole, to become dangerously slippery. If you are found to have moisterised skin your class may have to be re-arranged.
*Advanced students have un-limited heel height. |

|
| Q |
What are the exercise benefits? |
| A |
Pole dancing is a lot more strenuous than it looks, a good session on the pole can burn more calories than a session in the gym, and will certainly provide more muscle tone. You will be lifting your body weight, for brief periods at the beginning, for longer in intermediate and advanced levels.
Pole Dance will wake up your core, obliques and lower abs, improving posture and helping support your lower back.
Defy Gravity warm ups and cool downs enable you to increase your flexability so you will be able to do the splitzs with ease!
Learning to take your feet off the floor and hold yourself up with your Abs and Biceps/Triceps.
Gripping with your legs and lifting yourself up using your Quads will definitely give you that Pole Dancer body!
Once we put the spins and tricks together into a dance routine that’s where the Cardio aspect of Pole Dancing truly takes an effect.
Dont forget your bottle of water.
